What Day Is It!?

The magical week sandwiched between Christmas and New Year's can be a rollercoaster of emotions for parents. Let's be real: it's f*cking chaos, especially if you have kids at home. With school and daycare closed, the house brimming with new presents and toys, clothes in disarray, and restless children, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. And you have no idea what day it is. In this post, we'll delve into the unique challenges and strategies to not only survive but also make the most of this wonderfully chaotic time.

The house is overflowing with presents and toys: Undoubtedly, the aftermath of Christmas morning can be a scene of absolute delight and also a war zone. Wrapping paper litters the floor, new toys beckon from every corner, and the once-pristine living room resembles an unorganized toy store. My biggest piece of advice: EMBRACE THE MESS - it's a testament to the joy your children are experiencing. Make a game out of cleaning up together, and involve the kids in tidying up their new treasures.

Clothes are everywhere: With new clothes from generous gift-givers and laundry that's been put on hold during the festivities, it's no wonder that clothing can quickly pile up. Consider using this time to teach your kids about organization and responsibility. Encourage them to help sort, fold, and put away their clothes. Make it a fun activity with music and rewards to keep them engaged.

Sharing and sibling rivalry: Sibling squabbles and sharing issues can be par for the course during this time (hopefully my husband catches the golf pun, ha!). Remind your kids about the spirit of giving and sharing that the holiday season represents. Set up playdates with friends or family members to provide new playmates and opportunities for cooperation. Encourage them to play games or do activities together that require teamwork.

The naptime dilemma: The holiday excitement can make naptime a challenge. Stick to a consistent routine as much as possible, even during this chaotic week. Create a quiet, calming environment to encourage rest, and consider reading a holiday-themed book before naptime. If your kids resist napping, designate a quiet time for them to unwind with books or puzzles, allowing you to recharge as well because lord knows we need it too mamas!

Finding moments of calm amidst overstimulation: Remember, you're not alone in experiencing overstimulation. Take breaks for yourself whenever you can, even if it's just for a few minutes. Enjoy a cup of tea or take a short walk. Mamas, it's perfectly fine to tell your husband you need some alone time to recharge - he will understand. Have a glass of wine (I'm drinking one as I write this, cheers!) and take your CBD to keep you calm in the chaos. Plan activities that allow your kids to burn off energy, like a winter nature walk or a dance party in the living room.

The week between Christmas and New Year's may indeed be chaotic, but it's also brimming with opportunities for bonding, learning, and making cherished memories with your children. Embrace the mess and find moments of calm for yourself. In the end, this lively and crazy week is a reminder of the joys and challenges that come with being a parent, and it's something we wouldn't trade for the world.
